How to make a WhatsApp QR code

Put a WhatsApp "click to chat" link in a QR code: https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, with no plus, no leading zero and no dashes. Scanning it opens a chat with you, and you can have a message already typed for them.

The quick way

  1. Open the QR maker and choose WhatsApp.
  2. Type your number the way you'd normally write it, like 012-345 6789. The country code (60 for Malaysia) is added and the leading 0 dropped for you.
  3. Optionally type a message people will see ready to send, like "Hi! I'd like to order…".
  4. Wait for "Scans fine", then save or print it.

The link, if you'd rather build it yourself

WhatsApp's format is https://wa.me/ plus the full phone number in international format, leaving out any zeros, brackets or dashes:

You writeIn the link
012-345 6789 (Malaysia)wa.me/60123456789
+60 12-345 6789wa.me/60123456789
+65 9123 4567 (Singapore)wa.me/6591234567

For a ready-made message, add ?text= after the number, then the message with spaces written as %20 (this is called URL encoding):

https://wa.me/60123456789?text=Hi%20there

The QR maker does the encoding for you, including emoji and Malay or Chinese text.

Questions

Do I need WhatsApp Business for this?

No. Click to chat works with any active WhatsApp account. The person scanning doesn't need your number saved in their contacts.

Will people see my phone number?

Yes. The number is part of the link and the chat opens with it, so use a business number if you don't want to share your personal one.

Does it work on a computer?

Yes. WhatsApp's click to chat links work on phones and on WhatsApp Web.
